Waffles and hot dogs? Waffle hot dogs? Waffle dogs?!
Like how I pieced that all together? When really I kind of just didn’t have any hot dog buns for our game day snacking… but you guys…
Waffle dogs really are delicious!
You like corn dogs right? Corn dogs are a hot dog with a sweet corn bread wrapped around it.
Waffles are sweet just like corn bread. Therefore, waffle dogs are delicious!
My kids thought this was about the funnest thing they have ever eaten. Dad was rolling out waffles with a rolling pin and wrapping them around fresh off the grill hotdogs. Two of their favorite foods in one. Genius as far as they are concerned!
The idea for these came from necessity and from a norwegian specialty actually. Pølse med Lefse is a classic treat in Norway that is essentially a hotdog wrapped in lefse (which is a norwegian flatbread similar to a tortilla) and it is absolutely amazing.
Especially topped with the traditional norwegian hot dog mustard and fried onions… Oh, excuse me. I just drooled on my keyboard!
Of course, I could make my own lefse for the real deal year round, but why go to all that work when I can just lightly toast a frozen Eggo waffle, flatten it out a bit with a rolling pin and get a super easy, delicious treat?!
Seriously you guys. If you like corn dogs. Or hot dogs. You need to try these. So good.
Especially if you have kids. Or guys. Which is pretty much the same thing, right?
This far surpassed regular hotdogs on buns for us, and I actually kind of doubt we will go back to the old stand by very often. Waffles won the taste contest by far!
Also, total win for never having to remember to buy hotdog buns again, since I always have a stash of hotdogs and waffles in the freezer!
What’s your favorite way to top a hot dog?
Ingredients
- 4 hot dogs
- 4 frozen Eggo waffles
- ketchup
- mustard
Directions
Cook the hot dogs your favorite way. Grill, boil, microwave, whatever you prefer.
While the hot dogs are cooking, toast the Eggo waffles on the lightest setting of your toaster.
Remove the waffles and gently roll them out thin with a rolling pin (Or a glass or bottle on it's side!) stacking them together to keep them soft.
Take a cooked hot dog, roll it up in a thinned out waffle, and seal the edge with a bit of ketchup or mustard.
Serve immediately with all your favorite hot dog toppings!
